August 1st is just around the corner and it’s time for a new Artist of the Month! In August we have the pleasure to have Tanis from Tanis Fiber Arts. We chose her Blue Label Fingering Weight which is a merino/nylon blend. This yarn is sturdy enough for socks but soft enough for any project requiring fingering weight yarn. Ideal for cute baby knits too!. The colorways are mostly variegated but with some semi-solids and would look great in all those projects. You can for now have a peek at the colorways on Flickr but tomorrow at midnight EST the yarns will be available right here at yarn4socks.
1. What is your name, company name and which city and state are you from?
My name is Tanis, my company name is Tanis Fiber Arts and I live and work in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
2. How long have you been dying yarn?
I started experimenting with dying my own yarns for fun in 2007, by early 2008 I knew that I was in love and started my hand dyed yarns business.
3. How did you get started?
I started dying solely for my own knitting purposes, then I decided it might be fun to try to open my own Etsy shop. Next a LYS expressed interest in carrying my yarns, that’s when I realized that maybe I could really pursue this seriously.
4. What motivates you?
I am in love with colour and knitting. I am so lucky to be able to do what I love every day, and that’s what motivates me, just the possibility of waking up and spending my day doing what I love and calling it work.
5. What is the favorite product you’ve ever made?
I have so many favorites! I love all of my yarn bases for different reasons, but right now I am particularly fond of my Dipped Infinity Sweater (the sweater I’m wearing in my photo!) it turned a kit that I love in many of my favorite colours, into a sweater that I wear all the time.
6. Do you have any advice for other fiber artists?
My only advice would be to know why you’re doing what you’re doing. I think that you have to love what you do and be true to your own vision, you can’t try and make everyone else happy, because you never will, just focus on what you want to be making and those who like it will like it for what it is!
7. Are there any designers, fiber artists or any other artist you consider your role model?
I am constantly inspired by other artists. I am particularly amazed by knitwear designers. The ability to imagine a garment in my head and make it come to life is not a skill I’ve mastered yet, I am always in awe of people who can bring their designs to fruition and share them with the rest of us.
8. Please share with us a zany or interesting thing about you. It does not have to be fiber related.
I am in love with my whippet Stella! Aside from my husband and work partner Chris, she is my best friend and the love of my life! We do everything together and she makes everything we do more fun
